Configure Your Sucuri Backups

Sucuri Backups require configuration through FTP, SFTP, FTPS, or SFTP Private Key to establish a connection with your hosting account.

Important: If you migrate to a new hosting provider or server, you must reconfigure your backup settings.

  1. Sign in to your Sucuri Account.
  2. Locate the Backups column and click the icon for the website you wish to configure.
  3. Click the More menu in the upper-right corner (located above Backup Now), then select Settings.
  4. Configure the following options:
    • Schedule: Select your preferred backup frequency—monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, or every 6 hours. Click Save Settings when finished.
    • Content: Specify any directories (files) or tables (database) to exclude from backups.
    • Storage Region: Select whether backups should be stored in United States or European data centers.
    • Private Key: For cPanel servers, you can configure SSH (Secure Shell) private key authentication instead of FTP or SFTP. See Configure backups with an SFTP private key for detailed instructions.
    • SFTP/FTP: Enter your server connection credentials in this section.
  5. Database: Input your database credentials from your configuration file.
  6. After completing your configuration, click Backups (Domain) in the upper left corner.
  7. Click Backup Now, provide a name or label for this backup, and select Continue.
  8. Your initial backup typically completes within minutes, though larger websites may require one to two hours. An active progress bar with a percentage indicates the backup is still processing.
    • Feel free to navigate away and return later to verify completion. Until the new backup finishes, previous backup results will remain displayed.
    • Confirm you’re viewing the correct backup by checking the backup name on the dashboard.
  9. Select View Backup Content, then click the database and file icons to review what was backed up.
    • If files or database data are absent from the backup, an error has occurred. Double-check that your FTP and database credentials are accurate. For sites with redirects causing database backup failures, see Fix backup redirect error.

For assistance with backup configuration, submit a support ticket and securely provide your login credentials.
