How is the website backed up?
The system establishes a connection using FTP, SFTP, FTPS, or SSH protocols. After connecting, it uploads a PHP file that facilitates the backup process for both your site files and database.
What isn’t backed up?
The following file types are excluded from backups by default:
- Cache files
- Log files
- Compressed archives (.zip, .gz)
- SQL files
- Server-stored backup files
- .ftpquota
- .attach
- .DS_Store
- Symlinks
- Thumbnail files
- Repository files
- Git files
- AVI files
- MP3 files
These directories are also excluded:
- /cgi-bin
- __MACOSX
Use content settings to customize additional exclusions as needed.
How often are backups created?
Schedule backups at your preferred interval: monthly, weekly, daily, every 12 hours, or every 6 hours. Manual backups are also available via the Backup Now button.
How long are backups stored?
Backups are retained for 90 days.
What are the hosting requirements for using the backup service?
- PHP 5.2 or newer
- FTP/SFTP/FTPS/SSH access
- Read/Write permissions
What are the backup limits?
- Maximum file size: 4000000000 bytes (~4 GB)
- File count limit: 1,000,000 files
- Database support: MySQL only
- Maximum database size: 2 GB
How do I restore or download my website?
Several recovery methods are available:
- Access individual files via View Backup Content
- Download complete backups using the Download Backup button
- Restore files, database, or both through the Restore Backup button
What happens when my Sucuri Backups are cancelled?
Existing backups are deleted upon cancellation and won’t be available if you reactivate the service. Backups remain accessible for 7 days post-cancellation. Contact support within this timeframe to retrieve your data.
